The Broncos got a massive boost to their playoff hopes this offseason when they traded for Russell Wilson. Now their focus moves to the draft, where Denver won't make a selection until the 64th overall pick. But there will surely be plenty of good options still available for the Broncos with the last pick in the second round. And with Noah Fant now a Seahawk, Colorado State tight end Trey McBride is a perfect fit for Denver.

Albert Okwuegbunam figures to slot in as Denver's starting tight end to begin the 2022 season. But as of now, Albert O. doesn't have much competition. The Broncos signed Eric Tomlinson from the Ravens, but he had a grand total of one catch last season. Simply put, Denver needs to find a tight end in the draft. Let's look at three reasons why Trey McBride is a perfect fit for Mile High.

3 Reasons Trey McBride Is A Perfect Fit For the Broncos

3. Provides depth in case of injury

I think I speak for all Broncos fans when I say I'm rooting for Albert O. The guy is lovable, and he's an effective pass-catcher when he's healthy. But that's just it…when he's healthy. Albert O. played 14 games last year, but only four the year before. Without a complete season under his belt, it's hard to know if Denver can rely on him for 17+ games in 2022.

If Albert O. does go down, Denver has no real second option. McBride would offer some injury insurance at the very least. He's an NFL-ready tight end with all the tools to be effective in year one. Russell Wilson has historically lacked game-changing tight ends, but with all the attention the Broncos receivers will be getting, McBride would see a lot of one-on-one coverage, and he's got speed to beat linebackers easily. Just picture a Russ rainbow dropping into the hands of McBride 30 yards downfield.

2. Good scheme fit

New Broncos' head coach Nathaniel Hackett brings to Denver an offense ripe with variation. Hackett has experience running the West Coast scheme, and after working with Matt Lafleur in Green Bay—who comes from Kyle Shanahan's coaching tree—Hackett will inevitably bring some zone blocking that Denver fans know oh so well. Broncos fans should expect a lot of balance from the offense this season.

Well, McBride is a two-way tight end with receiving and blocking upside. The perfect compliment to a varied offense like Hackett's, McBride caught 91 balls for 1,125 yards during his senior season while also being a willing and able blocker. While Albert O. likes to stretch the field and could even lineup in the slot, McBride could come in right away in the traditional tight end role to offer better blocking, while still providing a threat down the seam.

1. Star potential at the end of the 2nd round

Simply put, the analytics love Trey McBride. McBride posted a 94.8 PFF grade in his senior season with the Rams. That's the second highest tight end grade since PFF began evaluating college players in 2014.

Next Gen Stats, meanwhile, slapped McBride with a grade of 85 heading into the draft. That ranks on the higher end of “Good,” and projects McBride as an eventual “plus starter” in the NFL.

If you can find that type of value with the last pick of the second round, that goes a long way towards building a Super Bowl contender. George Paton and the Broncos would be getting an instant impact player who many experts believe to be the best tight end in the 2022 NFL Draft.
