When describing Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, the word athletic doesn't usually come to mind. Flacco has never been a scrambler, and he made his name due to his big arm not his legs. But one of his new coaches thinks Flacco has underrated athletic ability.

Recently, new Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello called Flacco the most athletic quarterback he's ever worked with, per Zack Kelberman of 247sports.

“We've got to go out and do it and put it together. I have a lot of respect for Joe,” Scangarello told reporters Sunday. “I don't think the numbers truly reflect the player he is. I never have. … I think that there is a misconception that he is not athletic. You guys have watched the guy run around to escape the pocket the last few days. He's probably more athletic than any guy I've been around—Matt Ryan, those guys. He's got fluidity, and he can move. I'm excited.”

That's high praise. Scangarello came to Denver from San Francisco, where he served as an assistant under Shanahan coaching the quarterbacks. Denver is looking to reinvent their offense and catch it up to the modern NFL, so they hired the highly-regarded Scangarello to run it.

Flacco has a lot to prove after getting benched in Baltimore and traded, but it looks like he's a near-lock to open the season as the starter. That being said, rookie Drew Lock will be breathing down his neck the whole season, waiting for a slip-up.
