The Denver Broncos haven't exactly had an easy time filling the quarterback position since Peyton Manning retired following the 2015-16 campaign.
The Broncos tried Trevor Siemian. They tried Paxton Lynch. They tried Case Keenum. No one worked.
But earlier this offseason, Denver swung a trade for former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, and the Broncos then proceeded to select Missouri's Drew Lock in the second round of the NFL Draft in April.
As a result, Broncos general manager John Elway is confident in the team's situation under center.
“We just felt that with Joe coming in, getting him in a trade, and where he is in his career, we feel like he’s in his prime,” Elway said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “At least we hope he is. To have a young guy like Drew learn under him and be able to kind of solidify that position for a while — obviously we’ve been looking for one since Peyton [Manning] retired. That’s always a difficult position to fill, but we finally feel pretty good about that position and where we are.”
Since winning the Super Bowl during Manning's final season in 2015-16, Denver has missed the playoffs three years in a row, largely due to the fact that it hasn't had a whole lot of stability at quarterback.
In addition, the Broncos posted losing seasons in both 2017 and 2018, marking the first time since 1972 that Denver registered back-to-back losing campaigns.
But now, the Broncos have a serviceable veteran under center in Flacco and a bright young signal-caller in Lock on the rise.
