Those expecting Drew Lock to beat out Joe Flacco for the starting quarterback job in Denver should probably pump the brakes.

Broncos head coach Vic Fangio offered a sobering description of Drew Lock on Friday, saying he is not ready to be an NFL signal-caller:

“He’s not a quarterback yet,” said Fangio, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “He’s a hard-throwing pitcher that doesn’t know how to pitch yet.”

Ouch.

Lock, who played his collegiate football at the University of Missouri and just agreed to a deal with Denver earlier this week, was selected by the Broncos in the second round (42nd pick overall) of the NFL Draft back in April.

The 22-year-old is coming off a senior campaign at Missouri in which he threw for 3,498 yards, 28 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing 62.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 147.7.

Lock arrived at Missouri in 2015, but did not became the starting quarterback until his sophomore year, when he finished with 3,399 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 picks while completing 54.6 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 133.3.

Then, in 2016, Lock had a breakout year, throwing for 3,964 yards, 44 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, completing 57.8 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 165.7.

Some felt that Lock would actually be a top 10 pick in the draft, but Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins were all picked before him, resulting in Lock falling to Day 2.

The Broncos acquired Flacco in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this offseason, so it looks like the veteran will take the reins under center for the foreseeable future.
