The Denver Broncos appeared to be well on their way to their first win of the 2019 NFL season following a solid start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4. Unfortunately, the monster performance from running back Leonard Fournette helped fuel their last-second comeback win. Vic Fangio had to face facts.
The Broncos' porous rush defense allowed Fournette to gash them for 190 yards in the second half. According to Mike Klis of 9News, head coach Vic Fangio feels they were simply beaten up front:
“We got pushed around, he’s a big back and broke tackles and we got whipped.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Fangio's comments. Jacksonville's offensive line was able to create some push up front which allowed Fournette to use his size on the smaller defenders at the next level. Taking down a running back with his size and power is certainly no easy feat as evidenced by Denver's tackling struggles.
Perhaps even more disappointing is that Fournette had been struggling to find his footing thus far. Although a player with his talent and workload was bound to break ut at some point, allowing so many yards on the ground in one half was hardly an ideal way for this defense to get back on track following an abysmal start to the year.
It is no secret that this group has fallen vastly short of expectations. While they may not have much help from the offense, heir performance has raised plenty of concern about the state of the Broncos' defense.
They will need to find a quick solution before their Week 5 matchup against a Los Angeles Chargers' backfield that is now at full strength with the return of Melvin Gordon.
