The Denver Broncos have struggled to find consistent success on the field over the last two seasons missing the playoffs in each campaign.
However, the franchise is hoping to get back on track in the 2018 season, which star outside linebacker Von Miller has voiced that he has to take a larger role with the team beyond just his play on the field, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.
“I can’t just lead by example, I know that. It’s easy for anybody to say I’m going to lead by example, but I know I have to do that and I’ve got to talk to people,” Miller said. “I tried that, by example, and that’s it, but I know now you’ve got to get in there and lead. You’ve got to say something. Two years ago, three years ago, maybe, if they wanted me to give speeches, it was hard. Now, I know.
“And I want to be the best football player in this defense I can be and to get anybody who wants to come with me to do that, to come with me. That’s the priority.”
Miller has been the leading factor defensively for the Broncos for much of his career as he has established himself as one of the top players in the league on that side of the ball. Last season marked the sixth time where he notched double-digit sacks in his first seven years in the league. It made him the first player in team history to notch at least five sacks in each of his first seven seasons in the league, pushing himself up to second all-time in team history with 83.5 career sacks.
He has more than provided that spark on the field, it will require him to take that to the next level as a vocal leader, especially helping the younger players such as rookie defensive end Bradley Chubb. The hope is that both Miller and Chubb could form the dynamic pass rush duo that can anchor their defense in a similar manner that they had previous with Miller and DeMarcus Ware a few years ago.
Ultimately, this is an opportunity for Miller to showcase his leadership ability to help push his team back into the playoff picture and possibly further.
