It appears as though the Detroit Lions have a new coach on board. According to a recent report from The Detroit Free Press, the Lions intend to hire Kyle Caskey as the team's next running backs coach.
Caskey will notably be replacing former Lions running backs coach David Walker at the helm in Detroit.
“The Detroit Lions have a new running backs coach, and it's someone who has had plenty of success tutoring young rushers,” reports Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press. “The Lions hired Kyle Caskey to replace David Walker, a team source told the Free Press on Tuesday.”
Caskey, who has yet to officially be hired by the Lions, previously spent the last nine seasons as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff. Starting his Bengals tenure as an assistant offensive line coach, Caskey eventually went on to serve as Cincinnati's running backs coach while being promoted to such a role back in 2013.
With Caskey aiding both Joe Mixon and Jeremy Hill in surpassing the 1,000-yard rushing mark early on in their respective NFL careers, the Lions are now hoping that he can do the same with up-and-coming running back Kerryon Johnson.
Johnson, a rookie in 2018, ultimately encountered some injury trouble along the way with his initial NFL season ending a bit prematurely. Nonetheless, the first-year running back rushed for 641 yards and averaged an impressive 5.4 yards per carry in 2018. Even after suffering a season-ending knee injury in November, Johnson's yards per carry total went on to rank second in the entire NFL.
