Matt Patricia only had one chance to make a good impression on Detroit Lions fans – and he blew it. His head coaching debut for the Lions was catastrophic, as the Lions were mauled at home by the New York Jets in a 48-17 loss last week.

Matt Patricia and Lions, however, need to have a selective memory as they march towards a Week 2 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions will have to forget the loss, but remember the lessons they’ve learned from that disastrous loss. For Patricia, he wants that embarrassing setback as a motivation for his players going forward, per Michael Rothstein of ESPN.

“I think the biggest thing is exactly what I said, which is understand that No. 1, like I expressed to the team, to everybody, we’re not going to accept how we played the other night and we’re going to all get better, you know, and we’re going to move on,” Patricia said. “The best thing that we can do is turn the page and get going on the next opponent and really understand that there is a timeline to every week, unfortunately for us that we have to stay in, in order to have a chance to win or be successful that week.

Against New York, the Lions were bombarded on both ends of the field. Quarterback Matthew Stafford and Detroit’s offense barely got anything going for them, as the Jets recorded five interceptions and held the Lions’ backfield to only 39 rushing yards. On the flip side, the Lions let rookie signal-caller Sam Darnold to get his rhythm after picking him off in his very first career throw in the NFL.

Multiple Jets players have said that their team had so much success defensively in that game because they telegraphed what Stafford and company were going to do.

The Lions will look to avoid falling down a 0-2 hole to start the season, when they take on the San Francisco 49ers for their first road game of the season this Sunday.
