The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the biggest surprises this season pushing toward the best record in the league with a 10-1 record while riding a current nine-game winning streak.

All of this has put them in position to possibly become the first team to clinch a playoff spot depending on how Thursday night's matchup against the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys plays out, according to Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk.

The league confirmed that the Eagles can be the first to secure a postseason berth, and can do it before they take the field Sunday against the Seahawks Sunday night.

The Eagles (10-1) can clinch the NFC East title with a win or a tie against the Seahawks Sunday night, or a Cowboys loss or a tie Thursday night against Washington.

Beyond just securing a playoff spot, if the Eagles continue to trend in the same direction, they will have a strong chance to lock up the top overall spot in NFC securing them home-field advantage in the conference. They are currently a game ahead of the Minnesota Vikings and are two games up on the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams with just five weeks left in the season.

Philadelphia has been able to achieve much success behind the MVP-caliber play of second-year quarterback Carson Wentz, who leads the NFL with 28 touchdown passes and fourth with a 104.0 quarterback rating. This includes throwing multiple touchdowns pass all but twice this season. He has also recorded nine touchdown passes to zero interceptions in the last three contests.

The Eagles have also been stellar defensively, currently ranking third with 17.4 points per game allowed and sixth overall statistically. That includes being top in the league against the run at a meager 65.1 rushing yards per game allowed. All of this could be the formula for putting Philadelphia in the prime position for a deep playoff run to Super Bowl LII next February.
