There was a lot of rumors swirling before the NFL draft about what the New York Giants would do with the second pick. Most believed they would take Saquon Barkley, who they ended up but there was also some questions about with such a high draft pick if they would want the quarterback that would end up replacing Eli Manning.
For Manning, he was pretty unsure about what his future would hold, but he recently opened up to WFAN about how he just tried to not worry about it too much.
For the first time ever, I didn’t know what the future held,” he said, via the New York Daily News. “I tried not to overthink it and draw conclusions off information I didn’t know. Just had to say, ‘Hey, I have to be positive through the season, offseason, and just work out and be ready for whatever is thrown at me.’
“Obviously, I was very excited to hear news from Mr. Gettleman and Mr. Mara they wanted me back. I work extremely hard to keep my job and when you almost lose something it makes you appreciate it even more. That’s certainly the case here.”
For the Giants and Manning it was a pretty safe bet that he would be back and the starter this season, but if they would have taken a quarterback with a high pick it would have put a lot more pressure on him. It also wouldn't allow him to go out on his own time, it would probably be about when the new quarterback was ready to start.
With Manning's status in New York now secure after how the draft shook out, he says he's happy with the playmakers he has at his disposal and is looking forward to playing out the next two years he has left on his contract.
