With the start of the 2018 NFL season just around the corner, teams around the league have shifted gears toward making preparations for next year. Among them is the New York Giants, who have some big decisions to make this offseason with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

However, they will not be hasty in deciding how they approach it. According to Tom Rock of Newsday, general manager David Gettleman says nothing will be set in stone leading up to the draft.

“Absolutely not,” Gettleman. “There is a whole lot more information to gather. I’ve heard stories about teams setting their boards in February and that’s where they sit. That’s not my philosophy. I want all the information so I can make an informed decision. I don’t have any preconceived notions, I just let the process play out. You have to respect the process, and the process doesn’t end until you’ve done Indy, gone out to the Pro Days, had visits with kids both here and at their campuses, and then we gather up all the information. I’m a firm believer in respecting the process. You take short cuts, you’re going to make mistakes. I can’t sit here in early March and decide who I’m taking with the second pick in the draft. It’s silly.”

It is clear that New York has several needs on the offensive side of the ball, particularly in the backfield. The Giants' running game was virtually non-existent last season while the lack of a backup quarterback behind Eli Manning raises further questions about their future under center.

However, fixating on one particular area of concern can prove to be a team's worst mistake given the unpredictable nature of the NFL offseason. That said, it seems New York will be taking things one day at a time.

Fortunately, the Giants will have their fair share of opportunities to get a closer look at which players will make their short-list of potential options. Until then, it would not be much of a surprise to see them play coy on their future pick.
