Earlier this week, the New York Giants finally came to the decision to bench quarterback Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith ahead of their Week 13 tilt against the Oakland Raiders.

This latest move by the Giants has led to NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk to voice that the team should part ways with the 36-year-old after the 2017 season.

Surely, he won’t be back with the team in 2018. Given the structure of his contract, he’ll likely be cut not long after the Super Bowl. So cut him now. Let him go.

Actually, he may not want to be released. If released, Eli would be subject to waivers. Anyone (including the Browns) could claim his contract. If he fails to show up, Manning would owe the team that claims him more than $12.4 million.

There are certainly strong ties between Manning and the Giants after spending the first 14 years of his career with the team, but things have hedged to the point of it running its course. Given how things have sputtered out of control this season, combined with him being near the tail end of his career, only further push the narrative that he should move on.

This has already created chatter around Eli Manning that there could be several landing spots for him next season if New York does decide to part ways with him. Teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos could emerge as possible scenarios over next offseason.

The only thing that appears to be for certain at this point in time is that there will be plenty of internal upheaval once the 2017 campaign comes to a conclusion.
