The Green Bay Packers face off with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Those two teams already squared off in the regular season, and it did not go well for Green Bay.
The 49ers won by a final score of 37-8. It was truly a blowout.
However, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com believes the game was much closer than the score indicated.
The reason Florio has this thought is how the game started. Green Bay made a lot of mistakes that halted momentum. That included penalties, poor blocking and turnovers.
In fact, that became a trend. The first drive was stalled because of a penalty. They gave the 49ers life on a drive a little bit later due to a penalty away from the ball.
Then the very next Green Bay drive was stalled again because of a penalty.
Don't Expect As Many Packers Penalties
Yes, these are all bad plays by the Packers. But they are mistakes that they don't make all that often. Penalties by both Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison aren't usually seen.
With that in mind, those are the types of mistakes you can't really imagine the team making a second time around. Especially a 13-3 team like the Packers, one that played well basically all season long.
More penalties and uncharacteristically bad plays followed for Green Bay.
It's something that you could argue does not prove any substantial point. However, this is Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. They are disciplined and precise. A lot of silly mistakes took them out of the game.
The point Florio is making is that the Packers weren't really outplayed outside of penalties and dumb mistakes. So if you are expecting another blowout, think twice. Green Bay could just as easily play a clean game a keep it tight, or even walk away with the win.
Whatever you do, don't take their prior matchup at face value.
