Former Ole Miss and Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly made his Indianapolis Colts debut last Thursday, and despite the team's 24-16 exhibition loss to the Buffalo Bills, second-year head coach Frank Reich had high praise for his shot-caller.
Article Continues BelowKelly, along with Jacoby Brissett and Phillip Walker, round out the QB corps behind presumed starter Andrew Luck, a four-time Pro-Bowler. Luck, however, is nursing a calf strain injury, which has seen him away from the Colts' practice.
Here's what Reich had to say about Kelly's preseason outing (via Colts.com):
“He’s got that Kelly instinct in him,” Reich said. “And I say that as a positive obviously with what I know of his uncle. He’s fearless and not afraid, so that was a good move by him.”
“He’s been A-plus in every way, in the locker room and every way,” Reich said.
“Chad I thought really had a nice night,” Reich continued. “He made some plays.”
Kelly is the nephew of Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly, who led the '90s Bills to four straight AFC Championships, albeit falling in the Super Bowl each time.
The 25-year-old led Colts QB's on Thursday in passing attempts and completions, throwing 13/19 for 121 yards. He was sacked once and failed to connect on any endzone passes to receivers.
Walker, meanwhile, threw 8/18 for 85 yards, no touchdowns, and one interceptions. Brissett only got off five throws, connecting twice with receivers for 21 total yards.
The uncertainty surrounding Luck's injury and recovery time will surely bring renewed spirit and competition to the QB role given the possibility Kelly, Brissett, or Walker could conceivably start Week 1.
