The Jacksonville Jaguars attempted to trade Leonard Fournette before and during the 2020 NFL Draft to no avail. In accordance with their shortcomings to trade him, the Jaguars plan on moving forward with Fournette next season.
“There were just some minor discussions with that but nothing substantial throughout the draft or prior to the draft,” G.M. Dave Caldwell told the #PFTPM podcast on Monday. “I think the mindset is that we’re going to go forward with Leonard on the team. I had a good talk with him on Friday. I know Coach Marrone has had some discussion with him. He seems to be in great shape and mental frame of mind, and we feel that he’ll have a great season this year.”
Earlier this offseason, there was some tension created from Fournette when he lobbied for the Jaguars to sign Cam Newton. Doug Marrone, the head coach in Jacksonville, expressed the need for Fournette and second-year quarterback Gardner Minshew to get on the same page this offseason.
Just a season ago, Fournette rushed for a career-high 1,152 yards. On the other hand, he also hauled in a career-best 76 receptions for 522 yards. Despite his productive season in 2019, the Jaguars haven't expressed interest in extending Fournette beyond 2020.
Article Continues BelowAs a matter of fact, Jacksonville recently declined the fifth-year option for Fournette, making him a free agent in 2021. Seeing that Fournette and Jacksonville have rarely seen eye-to-eye in the past couple of years, the decision for his fifth-year option shouldn't have come as a surprise. Even though the Jaguars plan on moving forward with Fournette, it seems inevitable that he won't be on the team a year from now.
