How things have changed for Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette.
A year ago, Fournette was the focal point of the Jaguars' offense and took center stage as Jacksonville marched all the way to the AFC Championship Game, coming within a quarter of the Super Bowl.
Now, his future with the Jaguars is in question.
After Jags vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin laid into Fournette for his “selfish” behavior during Jacksonville's season-ending loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, the Jaguars voided the remaining guarantees in Fournette's contract, meaning the halfback could be out $7.1 million if the team decides to cut him this year or next year, according to Mark Long of The Associated Press.
Jacksonville acquired the ability to void Fournette's guarantees after he was suspended a game earlier this season for his role in a fight against the Buffalo Bills.
Fournette played in just eight games this season, battling hamstring injuries. In his time on the field, he was far from productive, rushing for just 439 yards and five touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.3 yards per carry, a far cry from the 1,040 yards and nine scores he racked up during his rookie campaign last year.
The 23-year-old, who admitted earlier in the year that he was out of shape, was inactive for the Jags' season finale against the Texans and, along with fellow halfback T.J. Yeldon, wasn't appearing to pay attention on the bench, incurring Coughlin's wrath:
“I am disappointed in the behavior today from T.J. Yeldon and Leonard Fournette. They were disrespectful, selfish and their behavior was unbecoming that of a professional football player,” Coughlin said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
The Jaguars finished the year with a record of 5-11.
