Las Vegas safety Johnathan Abram will appeal the $80,000 fine levied on him by the NFL for two illegal hits in last week's game against the Falcons, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft—with a pick acquired by the Raiders in the Amari Cooper trade—Abram is currently working off his rookie contract that is estimated to be worth approximately $2.8 million per year. While undeniably a huge amount for the average fan, Peter Schrager of NFL Network noted that Abram is paid in weekly installments of $41,000—meaning that the fines will encompass two weeks' worth of pay.

Though the league has been more aggressive over recent years in doling out penalties for illegal hits, the fines on the safety are unusual in that they came despite no flags having been thrown during the game.

Per Schrager, Abram was fined by the league for lowering his head in initiating a hit on an offensive player. According to guidelines released by the NFL in 2018, the rule was put in place to discourage players from tackling with the crown of their helmet. While referees have been advised to emphasize the rule during games, the crew's decision to forgo issuing penalties to the Raiders' safety will undoubtedly be a point Abram and his camp bring up during their appeal hearing.

Despite his pocket book being significantly lighter than it might otherwise be, the sophomore defender will now turn his attention to tomorrow afternoon's game against the Indianapolis Colts. Though Las Vegas is in desperate need of a win, Abram is just likely hoping to avoid losing anymore money.
