The Oakland Raiders have been really busy in free agency this offseason. They’ve already added 16 new players while losing eight. Head coach Jon Gruden explained per Raiders.com that he felt the team needed to bring in a lot of players this offseason in order to address multiple needs on the roster.

“We didn’t feel like we needed to bring in three players, we felt like we needed to bring in a lot of players. We had a lot of needs, and I think we said that in Indianapolis. Our secondary was decimated, our linebacking core we didn’t have any numbers, two of our defensive linemen were free agents, we had a lot of issues. We tried to bring in a lot of players, and our success rate was pretty good when we got them in the building.”

The amount of turnover in the Raiders’ roster is understandable given their situation. For one, they’re coming off a disappointing season, one which saw their defense continue to disappoint. Gruden was brought in to sort things out, and since he wields a lot of power in terms of personnel decisions, it shouldn’t be surprising to see him bring his players in.

But while the Raiders have had a lot of success bringing some new players in, it remains to be seen whether they will translate directly into significant improvement on the field next season. It’ll be on Gruden to make those new pieces fit, not only because he had a big say in bringing them in, but also because that's his job as the coach.
