The Oakland Raiders made some pretty sizable gambles this offseason, one of which was on Martavis Bryant. They traded their third-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the draft to acquire the mercurial but talented wideout.
However, it doesn’t seem as though Jon Gruden has liked what he’s seen from his new offensive weapon thus far in camp.
“He’s got to get out here and play better,” Gruden said of Bryant, via Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He’s in a competitive situation. Right now, a lot of the other receivers have had a nice camp. He’s just got to learn the offense. He’s got to stay out here. He’s had some illnesses. He’s got to get on the field. He’s got to master the offense and become more versatile, and that’s the key to making this team better.”
Gruden and the Raiders are counting on Bryant to be a dynamic deep-play threat for Derek Carr this season and compliment their top two receivers, Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson.
Although, it’s still unknown whether Bryant will even be available to play. A report came out a couple months ago about the Raiders potentially fearing another suspension for Bryant, who already missed the entire 2016 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Bryant said recently that he has yet to hear from the NFL about a potential suspension, but it’s still a possibility.
And even if Bryant does escape suspension, he must still prove his worth to Gruden, who’s clearly been unimpressed with what he’s seen from the wideout in camp. Despite the high price the Raiders paid to get Bryant, Gruden is the type of coach who won’t hesitate to leave Bryant off the field if he doesn’t feel he’s earned the right to play.
