LaFell’s signing comes on the heels of the Raiders’ release of Martavis Bryant over the weekend. Bryant, who did not perform well after arriving in Oakland from the Pittsburgh Steelers, was also facing a possible suspension from the league.
The 31-year-old LaFell spent the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, who released him last month. He also spent four years with the Carolina Panthers and two years with the New England Patriots.
Article Continues BelowLaFell played in all 16 games with 15 starts for the Bengals last season, racking up 52 catches for 548 yards and three touchdowns.
Although, LaFell has had a habit of playing very well in his first season with a new team. He had a career year in his first season with the Patriots in 2014 as he recorded 74 catches for 953 yards and seven touchdowns. And in his first year with the Bengals, he had 64 catches for 862 yards and six touchdowns.
LaFell will now join a Raiders receiving corps which has lost Bryant as well as Ryan Switzer in recent weeks. The veteran is clearly not capable of replacing the big-play ability that Bryant was brought in to provide in Oakland’s offense this season. However, he will add a reliable veteran receiver behind starters Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson, which the Raiders really needed to get.
