Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers have been putting together an impressive 2018 campaign that has seen them hold one of the best records in the league holding an 8-3 mark through the first 12 weeks.
Much of this has come behind the impressive play of Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers putting together arguably his most productive campaign. This has caught the attention of Pittsburgh Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ahead of their Week 13 matchup as he stated that Rivers is playing at an MVP level this year. Article Continues Below“He’s an MVP-caliber player, and he’s playing at MVP level right now,” Roethlisberger said of Rivers, who was drafted seven spots ahead of him in the 2004 draft. “What he did last week was pretty spectacular.”
Rivers has certainly been a huge factor with his arm this season as he currently ranks ninth 3,119 passing yards, fourth with 26 touchdown passes, seventh with a 69.5 percent completion percentage, and 115.7 passer rating. He has also thrown for more than 200 passing yards and multiple touchdown passes in each game this season.
On top of that, he is coming off what could be argued as his signature performance so far this season as he has completed 28-of-29 passes for 259 yards with three touchdowns to zero interceptions and 138.4 passer rating. This included him setting the NFL record with 25 consecutive completed passes, which had shattered the previous record of 22 straight completions held by Mark Brunell. Rivers had also set the all-time single-game completion rate mark at 96.8 percent, which topped Hall of Famer Kurt Warner's record at 92.3 percent.
The 36-year-old is playing some of the best football of his career in his 15th season, helping position the Chargers better for a potentially deep run in the playoffs toward contending for the Super Bowl. If he continues to play at this high level for the rest of the season, those aspirations could very well become reality.
