The Denver Broncos and new head coach Vance Joseph appeared to have the game securely in the bag entering the fourth quarter of their matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, as they were then clutching a 17-point lead. But errors on the part of Denver and a pair of touchdowns from the Chargers made the game interesting, and Los Angeles’ hope of stealing a win in the Mile High City was very much alive.
Down by only three points with five seconds remaining on the game clock and the Chargers with possession, Chargers kicker Younghoe Koo’s number was called to try to nail a field goal 44 yards away. Make it, and he’d send the game into overtime.
Initially, his attempt went right through the uprights, but Joseph called a timeout right before the snap in what was a clear attempt to ice Koo.
The tactic worked, as defensive end Shelby Harris managed to deflect Koo’s second try, preserving the Broncos’ 24-21 lead for the victory.
However, icing Koo wasn't the only thing on Joseph's mind. From the NFL Network's Alex Flanagan:
