Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs and Bruce Arians of the Buccaneers know the Los Angeles Chargers selected quarterback Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Now that he is starting for Los Angeles, Herbert is raising eyebrows. After an impressive showing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4, Herbert received some high praise.
According to James Palmer of NFL Network on Twitter, Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians compared Justin Herbert to Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“I told Anthony after the game ‘You’ve got a great one.’ That retreating play – that looked like Mahomes where we had an all-out blitz and he just kept retreating and threw a dime down the field. For rookies to make plays like that, you know they’re special.” – Arians on Herbert

Now, to be fair it is not like Arians is calling Justin Herbert the next Mahomes. That would be absolutely insane pressure for the rookie.
What Arians is doing though is saying that he sees some of Mahomes in Justin Herbert.
When the year started, Justin Herbert was the backup to Tyrod Taylor. Sure, many expected him to take over at some point in the year – but very few thought he would be the starter this early in the season.

For the most part, Justin Herbert has impressed. Through three games, the quarterback has thrown for 931 yards and five touchdowns compared to three interceptions. Meanwhile, he has 37 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground.
The Chargers are 0-3 in games Justin Herbert has played in, but they've been very competitive. They lost by just three points (in overtime) to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. Then Los Angeles dropped a five-point game to the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by seven in a Week 4 shootout.
