Los Angeles Chargers star wide receiver Keenan Allen has high expectations for his 2019 season and ESPN also thinks he is in line for a standout year. Last season, Allen had a nice season, but there is no doubt he wanted more success. After a strong start to the 2018 season, Allen's success weaned off and from Week 14 on as he never reached more than 78 receiving yards.
ESPN's outlook this season has Allen not having that falloff and finishing with more receptions and receiving yards. The one area that ESPN is concerned about going forward is touchdowns.
Article Continues BelowIf there's a concern area, it's touchdowns, as Allen hasn't scored more than six in a season since his rookie campaign in 2013. Allen's 5.4 OTD last season suggests he was fortunate to even reach six scores. Allen is in his prime at age 27 and one of the game's most effective receivers. Philip Rivers' top target is a safe back-end WR1.
ESPN's expectations are 101 receptions for 1,328 yards and six touchdowns. They also have him slated for 24 rushing yards and a total of 276.1 fantasy points.
ESPN isn't expecting Allen's touchdowns to move up from the six score mark he achieved last season, but with Tyrell Williams moving on to the Oakland Raiders, it's now or never for Allen to improve on that number. Williams caught five touchdown passes last year from Rivers and was the deep threat for the Chargers. Those touchdowns are going to have to move to someone and with Allen being Rivers' favorite target, he should be in line for an even bigger role.
Most importantly for Allen and Rivers, they need to try and get a Super Bowl win before the future Hall of Fame quarterback hangs up his cleats. If they are going to reach that goal this season, Allen's production is going to be key.
