Hunter Henry is getting set to be one of the top tight ends available on the free-agent market next month, but the Los Angeles Chargers may not let him get very far.
According to Jeff Miller of The Los Angeles Times, Chargers general manager Tom Telesco has acknowledged that while Los Angeles wants to sign Henry to a long-term deal, the franchise tag is a possibility.
So, it's looking like Henry will be in LA one way or another in 2020.
The 25-year-old is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he played 12 games, missing some time due to a tibial plateau fracture in his knee. During the time he was on the field, he was terrific, catching 55 passes for 652 yards and five touchdowns.
Henry, who played his collegiate football at the University of Arkansas, was originally selected by the Bolts in the second round (35th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He appeared in 15 contests during his rookie season, logging 36 catches for 478 yards and eight scores. The following year, Henry posted similar numbers, hauling in 45 receptions for 579 yards while reaching the end zone four times in 14 games.
The Little Rock native then missed all of 2018 after suffering a torn ACL in training camp (it was not the same knee in which he sustained the tibial plateau fracture this past season).
While Henry is supremely talented, his checkered injury history may result in some teams being rather cautious about offering Henry a long-term contract, so it will certainly be interesting to see how the Chargers approach the situation.
