The Los Angeles Chargers are still going through training camp without their starting running back in the backfield. For Melvin Gordon, the Pro Bowl running back is “just waiting for the call” to return to the team.
At the beginning of training camp, Gordon shared his dejection to his current contract and decided to hold out for a new deal. So far, the Chargers haven't shown any signs of budging and giving in to what their leading rusher in 2018 wants.
Gordon is entering the last year on his rookie deal and is set to make $5.6 million in 2019. As it pertains to running backs, the Chargers running back will be the 11th largest cap hit at the position this season.
Over the past few seasons, Gordon has become one of the NFL's best dual-threat backs for the Chargers. Despite his production, the majority of the league views the running back position as an easy-to-replace position.
Last season, Gordon missed four games due to injury and the team went 4-0 in those four games. Therefore, Los Angeles is confident that Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson can replace the production of Gordon this season.
In 2015, the Chargers viewed Gordon as a valuable piece to their offense and selected him with the 15th overall pick in the draft. After a disappointing rookie campaign, Gordon has been fairly consistent in the past three seasons.
Gordon has eclipsed 880 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground in each season since 2016. He also has added 149 receptions and 10 touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield.
The dynamic running back is waiting for the call to return to the field but his phone may collect dust before he hears a ring from the Chargers camp.
