The Los Angeles Chargers decided to go a different route this offseason. They elected not to bring back longtime quarterback Philip Rivers.
Rivers still wants to play, and should garner interest from quite a few teams. However, it's apparently not just teams that are looking into getting Rivers' services.
According to Andrew Marchand of the NYPost.com, ESPN is targeting Rivers for the broadcast booth for Monday Night Football.
“ESPN has also shown interest in free-agent quarterback Philip Rivers, according to sources. Rivers, 38, has said he intends to continue playing. NFL free agency officially begins March 18, but agents can start talking to teams on March 16.”
Yes, Rivers has expressed interest to play. This is a smart move by ESPN though. CBS just threw the bag at Tony Romo. Now they want to get a former great quarterback as well.
Rivers could be enticed too. CBS showed that there's a ridiculous amount of money in commentating. And Rivers is coming off one of the worst years of his career. At his age (38), teams might not be as interested in him as they would've been a year or two ago.

So even if the offers do roll in, they might not be the most lucrative deals. That might make Rivers start to contemplate his options. At the same time, if he's still playing, he's likely to try and win a Super Bowl.
If no true contenders are looking into the quarterback, that's another reason he might start looking elsewhere.
This is still farfetched though. Rivers still wants to play. Even at his age and coming off a bad year, he has an incredible resume. There will be some contender that decides he's an upgrade, and want to give him a call.
Once that happens, it will be extremely difficult for ESPN to pull him away from the football field just yet.
