As the four-year legal battle between the NFL and St. Louis comes to a close, one party left as the biggest winner. And surprisingly enough, that party isn't even in the NFL.

Dowd Bennett LLP and Blitz Bardgett & Deutsch, the law firm that represented the city of St. Louis in their lawsuit against the NFL, took home a LARGE amount of money. How large, you ask? Well, the firm will be taking 35% of the reported $790 million settlement between the league, the Rams, and the City. (via SportsLawLust)

That's a $276.5 million payout for the law firm. Guess that's a lot of reasons to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season.

The City of St. Louis got blindsided with Rams owner Stan Kroenke got approval from nearly all of the NFL owners to move the team to Los Angeles in 2016. It was a plan that had long been in the works for Kroenke, as he was also the one responsible for financing the Rams' SoFi Stadium. In 2017, St. Louis filed a lawsuit against the NFL and Kroenke, stating that the owner lied about his intentions of moving the team and the league circumvented it's own rules to allow the move.

After a long four-year battle with the NFL, the city finally agreed to the aforementioned $790 million settlement. What's baffling here is the fact that the city seemingly paid a contingency fee to the law firm. This practice is common with people who cannot afford a lawyer, as it essentially waives the fees if the case goes south. However… this is a city with their own cash revenue. They should've, in theory, been able to pay the lawyers as the case progressed.

What's done is done though. At the very least, St. Louis got some compensation from the NFL for their sudden move of the Rams away from the city.
