Beyond the plethora of moves to bring in more proven talent to the roster, the Los Angeles Rams have had All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald's contract situation hovering over the franchise.
With training camp set to get underway, there has yet to be any significant progress toward a new extension being worked out. Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff has weighed in on the situation during his first media session of training camp voicing that he doesn't believe it will be a distraction while hoping it gets resolved in the near future.
“It wasn’t last year,” Goff said. “We dealt with it last year, and I wish the best for him. Hope that gets resolved, but they’re dealing with it and hopefully it gets resolved soon.”
There hasn't been any real level of concern with the situation with the Rams continuing to air optimism about the direction things are heading. In many ways, this is also a similar matter to last year with Donald holding out in hopes of getting a new deal in place but wound up returning to the team just a day before the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
Things could be different in that regard as Los Angeles is more pressed this time around to get a deal done as Donald is in the final year of his deal with the chance that he can become a free agent next offseason. The 27-year-old has more than proven to be worth a new lucrative deal as he's established himself as arguably the best defensive player in the league, especially coming off his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
It may just be a situation that will work itself out prior to the start of the regular season to keep Donald under contract for the long haul as the centerpiece of the Rams defense for the next several years.
