The Miami Dolphins have officially begun gauging the trade market for Ryan Tannehill. What they might be able to fetch in a deal for the veteran quarterback, though, remains to be seen.
According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Miami has reached out to the Washington Redskins to assess their interest in trading for Tannehill, but is still taking a more “preliminary” approach to moving a player whose onerous contract and injury history makes him a tricky trade piece.
The Dolphins have engaged in trade conversations with several times about Tannehill. That news was first reported by the NFL Network, although widely expected and no surprise to readers of this space, which reported in December the team was moving on from Tannehill.
The Washington Redskins are one team the Dolphins have engaged, per one source.
Interestingly, a source tells the Miami Herald the “trade talks” are mostly the Dolphins letting teams know Tannehill is available. The trade talks are mostly the Dolphins calling and or instigating the contact. And the trade talks are mostly preliminary.
The Redskins are in the market for a quarterback as starting signal-caller Alex Smith rehabs from a broken leg that could sideline him for a portion or all of the 2019 season.

He missed the entire 2017 season after suffering a torn ACL early in training camp. The 30 year old returned last season, failing to improve on his unspectacular career norms by throwing for 1,979 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while completing 64.2 percent of his passes.
Tannehill, who restructured his contract this time last year to free up some additional cap space for Miami, has a cap hit of approximately $25 million each of the next two seasons before becoming a free agent.
