The Miami Dolphins made some significant changes to their roster this offseason. As a result, they made it a point to keep around at least a few familiar faces.
Among them is the signing of cornerback Bobby McCain. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, they have agreed to a four-year, $27 million extension:
The Miami Dolphins have signed cornerback Bobby McCain to a four-year extension that sources say is worth $27 million and includes $13 million guaranteed.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of this extension is that it makes McCain the highest-paid player at the nickelback position. It is no secret that the NFL has become a rather pass-heavy league. As a result, quarterbacks and pass-rushers are the highest-paid players in the league.
However, it seems that uptick has carried over into the nickelback position as well. Since offenses come out in passing formations most of the time, this makes slot corners an invaluable part of the defense. Players who are agile enough to guard receivers and physical enough to bring down running backs are hard to come by. Needless to say, McCain has proven to be one of the best.
Miami was able to dig up a gem when they took McCain in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Following a modest rookie campaign, he became a vital part of Miami's defense over the last two seasons. He has since recorded 94 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and three interceptions during that span. This made him a priority for the Dolphins to take care of this offseason.
