Among the top priorities for the Miami Dolphins in the offseason is to find a replacement for Brian Flores, whom they surprisingly sacked Monday morning. While there haven't been any names floated as serious candidates for the head-coaching vacancy in South Beach, Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh is being rumored to be gaining interest from NFL teams, including the Dolphins.
But according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, the Dolphins did not fire Flores with the potential of Harbaugh coming to Miami in mind.
While I realize many are assuming Flores’ departure is tied to Harbaugh’s potential availability, I can assure you that is not the case. The Dolphins are not targeting Jim Harbaugh, per sources. The decision to fire Flores is entirely independent.
Harbaugh has only led the Wolverines to just one bowl game so far in his stint in Ann Arbor since taking over the program in December 2014, but Michigan is also coming off just its first College Football Playoff appearance under the 58-year-old former San Francisco 49ers head coach.
It's possible that Harbaugh is getting enticed by the potential to be a head coach again in the NFL, especially with a vacancy in Miami, where he'd be handling a team that has finished above .500 in each of the last two seasons. It's also worth noting that Miami owner Stephen Ross, is a Michigan alumnus, so the connection is at least there, to begin with.
