Hall of Fame coach Don Shula passed away on Monday, prompting an outcry of memories and recollections about the former Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Colts head coach. One such message in reaction to Shula's passing was from Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt.

Watt, 31, wrote on social media, “The NFL lost a legend today,” also quoting former Houston Oilers head coach Bum Phillips, Wade's father. “Don Shula can take his and beat yours, and he could take yours and beat his.”

Shula, born in 1930, won back-to-back championships with the Dolphins in 1973-74, including the only undefeated season in NFL history when Miami finished 14-0 in the regular season (before the regular season added two games in 1978) and 3-0 in the postseason, including a 14-7 Super Bowl VII victory over the Washington Redskins.

Shula also spent seven seasons with the Colts before his storied, 26-year tenure in charge of the Dolphins, holding the head coach role from 1970-1995.

Watt was only six years old when Shula left the game of football as a head coach, but the longtime purveyor of steaks had a lasting impact on the league and the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, who missed half of Houston's 2019 regular season dealing with a pectoral injury only to return in the postseason for the Texans' two games.

Hall of Fame Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino spoke out about the passing of his former coach today, too, saying Shula embodied “greatness,” as the sports world mourns.
