Before the 2019 season, many assumed that the Miami Dolphins would own the first-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and they'd be selecting Tua Tagovailoa. Instead, the Dolphins exceeded their expectations and have the No. 5 overall pick in the draft.
In Brian Flores' first year as the head coach, Miami finished with a 5-11 record. The Dolphins were able to win five games with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting quarterback. With Fitzpatrick entering his 16th season, Miami needs to find a long-term solution to replace him.
While they don't have the No. 1 pick as expected, the Dolphins could still be in play to select Tagovailoa. But with quarterbacks being a coveted position, Miami may need to trade up to get the guy they want. Considering that, here is why the Dolphins should consider trading up from the No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Other teams want Tagovailoa
Heading into the offseason, it's no secret that the Dolphins are intrigued by the idea of selecting Tagovailoa. However, you would be naive to believe that the Dolphins are the only team that is interested in the Alabama quarterback.
Besides Miami, the Los Angeles Chargers, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers could all be trying to manufacture ways to move up in the draft. If the Dolphins don't pull the trigger, another team is going to supplant them and select Tagovailoa.
To prevent chaos from ensuing, the Dolphins can package a bundle of their draft picks to move up a few spots. When it comes to finding a franchise quarterback, sometimes it is worth mortgaging part of your future to get the right guy.
The Dolphins have the draft capital to make it happen
Over the past couple of seasons, Miami has been able to trade away some of their players for future assets. Of course, most of those assets were in the form of draft picks.
As a matter of fact, this year alone, the Dolphins will have three first-round picks. Given the amount of draft picks they possess, general manager Chris Grier knows that Miami has ‘more than enough' to trade up in the draft if they choose to do so.
For most teams, trading away multiple early-round picks could be detrimental to the future of the franchise. But for the Dolphins, they have enough early-round picks to trade up and it wouldn't affect their future as much as it would other teams.
If Miami wants to build upon what they started in 2019, they need to add someone like Tagovailoa. Unlike most organizations, the Dolphins have nearly an endless supply of draft picks to make a trade up in the draft happen.
