Devin McCourty wants the New England Patriots to bring back Chris Hogan.
While hosting his “Double Coverage” podcast, McCourty was joined by his former teammate, Hogan. The 32-year-old receiver previously played for the Patriots from 2016 until 2018, winning two Super Bowls in the process.
However, he wasn't re-signed by New England at the conclusion of the 2018 season. Instead, he linked up with the Carolina Panthers but had one uneventful season. In fact, Hogan appeared in just seven games while catching just eight passes for 67 yards and zero touchdowns.
Despite that uneventful season, McCourty wants Hogan back in New England.
“Every time I say something on this show, it becomes (a story), so here we go,” the Patriots safety said. “… You heard it here first, man: Chris Hogan back to New England. We get him back there, we got 7-Eleven, always open. We’ve got a new quarterback, let’s bring an old target back.
“That’s what we do in New England. LeGarrette (Blount) came back, next thing you know, 18 touchdowns. That’s what happens in New England. Deion Branch came back in 2010, touchdowns everywhere. So New England, get a head start. Start your articles now. It’s 8:47. Devin has said it.”
Would Patriots Have Interest in Hogan?
It's true the Patriots have a history of linking up with old players. However, it's unclear if Bill Belichick would have any interest in reuniting with Hogan. The 6-foot-1 receiver will be 33 years old this season and is coming off of a serious knee injury last season. When you factor in that New England has eight receivers under contract, there isn't exactly much room for Hogan.
Hogan did state that he's staying in game shape.
“It’s been tough, but I’ve been taking it just one day at a time,” he told the McCourtys. “I mean, obviously I want to play football more than anything still. So this whole thing going on, it kind of is what it is. I’m just taking the time that I have with the family right now — that’s the most important thing that I get to do in the offseason. I know it’s going to be a little bit more time now — who knows when we’re going to get back to it — but I’m just trying to stay as prepared as I can.
“You know me, I’ve been working out since December. I haven’t really taken much time off. And now with this whole pandemic going on and everything … we have a lot going on here, so I’m not trying to be out doing anything crazy but still trying to stay as ready as I can.”
With that being said, Hogan could provide the offense with some familiarity. With the exception of Julian Edelman, none of New England's receivers have been in the system past a couple of seasons. Hogan could provide a security blanket of sorts, especially for a team that just re-signed Brian Hoyer.
