The New England Patriots worked out Marshall Newhouse and they must have been impressed with what they saw because according to Field Yates of ESPN the team has decided to sign him for the rest of the year.

The Patriots won't have to make a corresponding move, because they still had an open roster spot after trading Demaryius Thomas to the New York Jets on Tuesday.

The Patriots offensive line is short-handed and a veteran depth signing makes a lot of sense. Captian David Andrews is out for the season dealing with blood clots in his lungs, and right tackle Marcus Cannon left the week 1 victory with an injury. His injury isn't expected to be season-ending, but he could still miss a couple of weeks with the injuries.

Newhouse has been in the league for eight years and is comfortable playing both tackle positions. He was drafted in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers out of TCU in 2010.

He has been an NFL journeyman that has bounced around from team to team. In 2017, he started 14 games with the Oakland Raiders as a tackle and since that point, he has continued to bounce around.

There is no doubt that Newhouse will get into his playbook quickly to try and get ready as quickly as possible, but it still wouldn't be a surprise to see him as a scratch this week just based on time getting ready.

When he is ready to play he will be a boost to the offensive line and could end up being a key part of the team this season.
