Sony Michel has been a pleasant surprise for the New England Patriots so far this season in his rookie year. After being drafted with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Michel missed quite a bit of time due to injury. He came back in the regular season and has quickly become one of the most important pieces of the Patriots' offense.
Unfortunately, the rising star running back suffered a knee injury in Week 7 and could miss some time.
According to a report shared by Tyler Sullivan of 247 Sports, Michel could miss a couple of weeks due to the injury.
Following the injury, Tom Brady talked about Michel and how much he has already meant to the team. He is hoping that the rookie running back can return to the field soon.
“Sony has really been coming into his own providing some really explosive runs for us. To see him go out and get twisted up like he did [Sunday] in the second quarter, I think everyone was holding their breath. Just happy it is not as serious as it could have been. Hopefully we get him back at some point soon.”
Throughout the first six games of his NFL career, Michel has carried the football 95 times for 422 yards and four touchdowns. Those numbers average out to 4.4 yards per carry.
At just 23 years old, the former Georgia Bulldogs' star is proving that he can be a legitimate starter in the NFL. New England has needed to find a true workhorse back for a few years. James White is still an extremely valuable third-down back, but Michel could take over the every-down back duties in the future.
Expect to see Michel attack his recovery process and get back on the field as soon as he possibly can. New England certainly needs him and are thankful that the injury was not more serious.
