Gabrielle Gilmore, wife of New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, denied reports her husband had dinner with Cam Newton the night he contracted COVID-19.

The Patriots' Week 5 matchup with the Denver Broncos was rescheduled in part because Gilmore and other members of the organization had tested positive last week.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had refused to address the rumors, though he said the team had been following protocol.

Gabrielle Gilmore quote tweeted an article by NESN beat reporter Doug Kyed, shooting down the idea her husband had dinner with Cam:

The rumor started after Adam Schefter's appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia.

Schefter reported Cam and Gilmore were allegedly seen having dinner the Friday night before New England's Week 4 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs:

“I happen to believe — I was told that, in the New England area over the weekend, that Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore were spotted having dinner together on Friday night,” Schefter said, via Ryan Hannable of WEEI. “So, and I was aware of that over the weekend. So to hear that he tested positive, I got to be honest, is not overly surprising to me. You know, if you’re at a dinner table with somebody who’s got the virus, there’s a chance — I would think — that you’re going to get the virus.”

Newton tested positive Saturday morning, and Gilmore himself also tested positive after playing against the Chiefs.

Of course, Schefter's initial report was very hearsay in nature. It would seem any sort of investigation would determine a violation of protocol, but the NFL has yet to suggest it will take that step.

In any case, the Patriots hope not to have any more setbacks ahead of this weekend. They're set to face the Broncos on Sunday.

New England is 2-2 on the season.
