The New York Giants should have one of their weapons available for Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard should be ready to play for the season's debut, said head coach Pat Shurmur on Sunday, via ESPN.

Shepard suffered a fractured left thumb earlier into training camp. Multiple reporters noticed that on Sunday he was without the team's yellow non-contact jersey. So, when asked if he'll available come the team's Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys, Schumer said,

“We believe so, yeah. Absolutely,” per ESPN.

Shepard is still wearing a splint on his thumb for support, and he won't play in the Giants' third preseason game. But, he feels as if he's on the right track to making a full return.

“It’s actually healed up pretty fast and I’m feeling good,” said Shepard, per the New York Post‘s Zach Braziller. “I wouldn’t say I’m all the way back, but I’m pretty close. I’m where I need to be. I feel good about that.”

The Giants have big expectations for Shepard in 2019. So much so, that the team decided to extend the 5-foot-10 receiver in April to a four-year, $41 million contract with $21.3 million in guaranteed money. The extension came on the heels of a certain player being traded away and the addition of Golden Tate.

It once looked like the Giants would have to trot out a hodgepodge of unknowns at wide receiver when Shepard initially hurt his thumb. But that is no more. However, the team will be without Tate for the first four games due to a PEDs suspension. Nonetheless, it's undoubtedly a good thing to see Shepard back in action.
