The NFL has already announced that some facilities will be permitted to open on May 19. However, some teams won't be as fortunate as others. While most of the league will return, the New York Jets and the New York Giants are among the teams that will not open their facilities next week.
Earlier this week, Roger Goodell sent a memo to teams, highlighting the precautions teams should take to re-open their facilities. Within the memo, Goodell states that each team must be given permission to return by their local and state government.
Of course, New York has been affected pretty badly by the coronavirus pandemic. Given that, it's apparent that the NFL is being cautious before they allow the New York teams to return.
Pat Hanlon, the Giants senior vice president spoke to USA TODAY Sports about the re-opening of facilities:
“It takes more time than four days to reopen a facility that has been shut down for two months. We are subject to state regulations,” Giants senior vice president of communications Pat Hanlon told NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY Network on Friday night. “Bottom line, when we are cleared on all fronts to go back, we will, in an orderly, systematic, safe way to protect those in our building. It has been a process and protocol we have been developing for the last month or two.”
Even though some facilities will open, no players or coaches are allowed to return yet. Besides some front office members, only players rehabbing injuries may return to the facility. But until the government gives them the go-ahead, the New York teams won't be allowed to re-open their facilities.
