Crazy things tend to happen before the NFL draft every year. The only thing crazier is the speculation that develops in the weeks leading up to the draft; speculation that is often fueled by the most innocent of observations.

For example, it appears that Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay sat next to each other on a plane headed for Indianapolis and the NFL Combine.

According to Ian Rapoport, McVay was already seated on their Southwest Airlines flight, and Mayfield hustled to the middle seat next to him.

Hmmm … whatever could that have been all about?

Mayfield has to know that the Rams are going with Jared Goff for the foreseeable future. He also has to know that he is more than likely not going to be available when the Rams get a turn with the No. 23 pick.

McVay would be questioned greatly if he and the Rams chose Mayfield with their first-round selection. Many questioned whether it was wise to give someone so young the reigns of an NFL team. He’s proven himself to be a pretty smart guy. So he has to know how drafting Mayfield would be perceived—unless he knows something about Goff the rest of the world doesn’t.

More than likely, it was a harmless conversation between a football coach and a football player. Nothing more. Nothing less. It will be interesting to see if either is questioned about the plane ride during media sessions at the Combine.
