Johnny Manziel’s time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is over before he even got to play in a competitive game. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback was traded by the Tiger-Cats to the Montreal Alouettes Sunday, per ESPN News Services.

“We have acquired an exceptional quarterback with undeniable talent,” Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed said in a statement. “With his great mobility, his athletic abilities and his instinct we believe that he will have a positive impact on our offence.”

Manziel, 25, didn’t get a chance to play at all during five regular-season games he spent with Hamilton. He was stuck behind starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who had been playing very well this season. Masoli tied a CFL record with nine straight 300-yard passing games before the team's Week 5 bye.

In Montreal, Manziel will be reunited with a familiar face in Alouettes coach Mike Sherman, who recruited the quarterback to Texas A&M in 2011 as the Aggies' head coach. Although, Manziel didn’t end up playing for Sherman, as the coach was replaced after Manziel’s redshirt freshman season.

Sherman has expressed his excitement with reuniting with Manziel, who will likely get his chance to play in Montreal. The Alouettes have already shuffled through three quarterbacks this year due to injuries. They have the worst offense in the Canadian Football League and are currently in last place in their division with a 1-4 record.

If Manziel still isn’t able to break through despite that lack of top competition, it’ll be a bad sign for his CFL-and pro football-career moving forward.
