The recent societal events connected to the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement in American society have gained traction on social media sites. With this, a meme was created by some creative minds that falsely claimed that the NFL will fly the Black Lives Matter flag under the American flag at all games in the upcoming season.

The meme was first posted on Facebook:

On June 5, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and acknowledged the league's mistakes in light of the situation.

About a week later, the NFL responded by announcing a 10-year, $250 million commitment to building a fund to “combat systematic racism and support the battle against ongoing and historic injustices faced by African-Americans.” The league also committed to a greater emphasis on social justice issues on the NFL Network and other league-owned media properties to raise awareness to its audiences.

On June 22, the San Francisco 49ers flew a Black Lives Matter flag at Levi’s Stadium. The flag has been placed next to the American flag and the California flag, according to the 49ers Instagram page.

As for the NFL, Brian McCarthy, the league's vice president for communications, a league spokesman said the meme is not correct; the league has not issued a policy on the BLM flag.

USA Today took note of the circulating photo and have concluded that it is indeed a hoax. The newspaper company rated the claim as FALSE because it was not supported by their team's research. One team out of 32 has flown the Black Lives Matter flag and the NFL has not announced a blanket policy for all franchises to follow.

In light of the ongoing societal events and the coronavirus pandemic, the upcoming 2020 NFL season is still set to commence on September 10.
