Bill Callahan gave rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins the start for the Washington Redskins' Week 9 tilt with the Buffalo Bills. After losing the game, the interim head coach won't commit to him starting in their next game, against the equally as hapless New York Jets — following their Week 10 bye.
“Nothing has been decided yet,” said Callahan on the matter after Washington's 24-9 loss to Buffalo, per JP Finley of NBC Sports Washington. The Redskins lost big to the Bills, but that can't solely be blamed on the rookie quarterback. While he wasn't able to get in the end zone, he also didn't make any downright terrible mistakes — as he previously did in his first NFL playing time.
Haskins finished the game with a stat line that reads 15 of 22 for 144 touchdowns, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. On the final two drives of the first half, he breathed a little bit of life into the Washington offense, as he led back-to-back field goal scoring drives. Nonetheless, it was far from enough to construct a win for Washington over the league's third-rated defense.
Washington is 1-8. Though Haskins — the No. 15 overall pick in April — hasn't wowed as a rookie starter, they likely aren't looking to win. They are trying to survive a season that most couldn't. Playing him moving forward would allow the team to get a good look at him while he gains invaluable experience. The main worry to doing so is breaking him: the offensive line and skill position groups surrounding him a less than “less than ideal.”
