The Washington Redskins just added Chase Young to their defensive line and they are making sure Jonathan Allen stays with the team beyond 2020. According to the team's official Twitter account, the Redskins have exercised the fifth-year option on Allen.

Just a few years ago, the Redskins selected Allen with the No. 17 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Fast forward to now and Allen was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract.

But with Allen being a first-round pick, Washington is given a chance to add one more year to the end of his contract. The Redskins, along with the other 31 teams, have until May 3 to decide on whether or not to use their fifth-year option on their first-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft.

While it may be a tough decision for some teams, it was an easy choice for the Redskins. Since entering the NFL in 2017, Allen has evolved into one of Washington's most reliable players on defense.

In just the past two seasons alone, Allen has accumulated 14 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, and 31 quarterback hits. Now, with Young and Montez Sweat coming off of the edge next season, Allen's numbers could see a slight increase in 2020.

Regardless of whether he got the fifth-year option, Allen was set to carry a $3.6 million cap hit next season. Given his production, Allen would've been one of the high-profile interior defensive linemen free agents next offseason. However, before he could even begin thinking ahead to free agency, Allen is now under contract through 2021.
