The Oakland Raiders are set to conclude their offseason program with mandatory minicamp, which begins tomorrow. But as expected, defensive end Khalil Mack is not expected to show up due to his continued contract dispute, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Mack has not attended any part of the team’s offseason program as he holds out for a new deal. The Raiders can fine him over $80,000 for staying home for the mandatory portion of the program.
The 26-year-old is set to earn $13.8 million this season on his fifth-year option, and he wants a long-term extension which will make among the highest-paid defensive players in the league.
Article Continues BelowMack has certainly played like one of the top defenders ever since he came into the league. He’s played and started in all 64 games over the last four years and has had double-digit sacks in the last three. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 and has been a First-Team All-Pro selection twice.
It’s not ideal for the Raiders’ preparations to be without easily their most impactful defender. New defensive coordinator Paul Guenther has even called out Mack recently, saying the star defensive end will have “a lot of catching up to do” when he returns from his holdout.
It remains to be seen just how long that holdout will last. It’s unlikely that Mack steps back onto the field without a new contract, so there’s a real possibility of him also skipping training camp next month if he still doesn’t have his deal by then.
