The New Orleans Saints secondary has excelled during their six-game winning streak, but it would be even better with Delvin Breaux in the mix.
Unfortunately, that won't happen in 2017. As reported by ESPN's Mike Triplett, head coach Sean Payton announced on Thursday that Breaux will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
New Orleans Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a broken fibula, coach Sean Payton confirmed Thursday.
Breaux had been designated to return from the injury, which he suffered in training camp, but an unspecified setback occurred less than two weeks into his return to practice.
Just last week, a report from the NFL Network said Breux would be ready to return to the field in three-to-six weeks. That timetable ended up being far too optimistic.
Article Continues BelowBreaux was the number one cornerback for the Saints in 2016, leading a unit that was abysmal in stopping the pass when he missed 10 games due to leg and shoulder injuries. Luckily for New Orleans, rookie Marshown Lattimore and Ken Crawley have locked down the starting corner roles.
Lattimore, the 11th overall pick in this year's draft, is considered by many pundits to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, putting him in the running for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Under his watch, the Saints have the fourth-best DVOA against the pass, per Football Outsiders.
Breaux will be a restricted free agent in 2018, and given the emergence of Lattimore and Crawley, it will be interesting to see what New Orleans decides to do. De'Vante Harris has solidified the nickel back, but one of them could be converted to safety if Breaux stays onboard.
