The San Francisco 49ers fell short of defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, but they could be dealing with a problem bigger than football. Nearly two weeks after the heartbreaking loss, the City of Santa Clara is prepared to battle the 49ers over the “mismanagement” of Levi's Stadium.

For years, the 49ers have managed NFL and non-NFL events that took place at Levi's Stadium. However, Santa Clara officials have alleged that the team has committed fraud and misuse of funds. As a result, the city council is attempting to oust the 49ers as the manager of the stadium (via KTVU 2).

“The management agreement provides for termination if there is misappropriation, willful misconduct, or misrepresentation or fraud,” said Santa Clara City Attorney Brian Doyle via Jesse Gary.

“This is very serious. They’re taking our money and making the decision to give it to themselves,” said Doyle. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

The court documents that Doyle presented in this case reveal that members of the 49ers gave out $800,000 in taxpayer money. As for the misuse, Doyle believes the team has made side-sponsorship agreements.

Since the allegations were made, 49ers Vice President Rahul Chandhok vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Chandhok believes that the city of Santa Clara is creating these allegations as a form of retaliation.

Earlier this week, the city council voted unanimously to terminate the team's management of the venue. Despite the vote, the 49ers continue to have control over what happens at Levi's Stadium. As a matter of fact, the 49ers recently booked Justin Bieber to perform.
