San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is getting a taste of his first offseason with the team. He’s coming across some new and different things, which are bound to be a challenge to get used to. According to him, the biggest difference has been learning the team’s new playbook.
“I’d say the biggest difference is the new playbook,” Garoppolo said per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “Still picking stuff up and critiquing the little things, but having the film from last year and going off of that has really helped a ton.”
Garoppolo likely didn’t get much of a chance to go through the entire playbook after he arrived in midseason from the New England Patriots, which is always a tricky transition for any quarterback. Head coach Kyle Shanahan likely simplified the playbook when they threw him into the starting spot in December.

Of course, there’s still a lot to learn within Shanahan’s system. But as Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons showed a couple of years ago during his MVP season, Shanahan’s offense can be a formidable one once the quarterback becomes more familiar with it.
Garoppolo has the chance to do so this offseason, and if he can successfully pick it up, the Niners could be set for more of the same Jimmy G who excelled at the end of last season.
