Free-agent cornerback David Amerson just got cut by the Oakland Raiders a couple weeks ago. However, he has found no shortage of suitors interested in his services. The 26-year-old has already visited with the Chicago Bears and the Houston Texans, and the San Francisco 49ers have been named as one of several teams that have an eye on him as well, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Barrows notes that Amerson still doesn’t have a scheduled visit with San Francisco, but one is likely given the Niners’ need for upgrades at cornerback this offseason.
Article Continues BelowNo visit has been scheduled with yet with San Francisco, which is expected to shop for cornerbacks in both free agency and the draft. The only two outside cornerbacks signed for the upcoming season are Ahkello Witherspoon and Greg Mabin. Longtime starter Dontae Johnson is a free agent and the 49ers aren't expected to make a push to bring him back.
Amerson spent just under three seasons with the Raiders as he came over after being cut by the Washington Redskins. He had a terrific debut season for Oakland in 2015, recording four interceptions and 27 passes defended.
However, Amerson is coming off a disappointing 2017 season which saw him play just six games in large part due to a foot injury. But despite that rough year, it seems clear that several teams remain confident in Amerson’s ability to contribute in the secondary given the interest he’s garnered early on this offseason. The Niners will have stiff competition if they indeed aim to bring him on to bolster their cornerback depth.
